Ways to Continue Learning Outside of the School Day
Fourth graders at Lincoln are expected to read at least 30 minutes each night. The benefits of reading extend far beyond the enjoyment of a good story.
When students are reading at their "just right" level, they practice metacognitive strategies that help monitor comprehension, learn new words,
and build their brain.

At-Home Learning for ANYTIME!
Looking to keep academic skills strong at home? Here are a few digital and analog (paper & pencil) ways to do just that!
Work WorkUse part of a book you've already read to complete the following tasks:
1) Prefix Finder – Find a word with a prefix such as: anti, de, dis, en, fore, il, im, in, inter, ir, mid, mis, non, over, pre, re, semi, com, em, ex, per, sub, super, trans, under, un. - Then, list (5-10) more words that you know have the same prefix. - Lastly, define the prefix and tell how it changes the root/base word. 2) Suffix Finder – Find a word with a suffix such as: ible, able, al, ary, ant, ent, ate, ation, cy, er, or, fy, ism, ist. - Then, list (5-10) more words that you know have the same suffix. - Lastly, define the suffix and tell how it changes the root/base word. |
Reader's Workshop- Read, read, read!
- Try an e-book from the William H. Lincoln School library using your psbma username and password. - Re-read a book you've already read. Be sure to think deeply about new information you notice the second time around! - Read something you've NEVER read before, like a magazine or cookbook. - Read a picture book to a sibling, pet, or house plant. - Read the directions of a game before playing (even if you already know the rules)! |
Writer's Workshop- Looking for things to write about? Try Writing Journal Bingo!
- Make lists! At school, we call these story seeds, because you can use any idea off your list to grow into a piece of writing! - List your favorite things inside, places you'd like to go, things you wish you could change, etc. - Then choose an item off your list to write about. You can make it a narrative (for the purpose of telling a story) or a persuasive piece (for the purpose of telling your opinion and making others agree with you). |
MathWhatever math you choose, use Fourth Grade strategies!
- How to Add/ Subtract Large Numbers - How to Multiply Large Numbers - How to Divide Large Numbers - Practice concepts we've already covered in 4th grade, like place value, adding and subtracting large numbers, multiplying using split area model or partial products, comparing and ordering fractions. Grab some dice or cards to make numbers and create word problems, make a game, teach a strategy you know to others, get creative with it! |
Science/ SS- Take a virtual tour of a museum. Record facts and exhibits that are interesting to you, then use your notes to write a recommendation for others! - Go outside! Observe evidence of change in the world around you. What are the plants doing? Do you see any evidence of erosion? Take or sketch pictures of what you find. |
